Woman Detained in Atlanta Airport Because of Her Stutter
So, a few days ago I had the pleasure of speaking with Kylah Simmons, a 20-year-old Kalamazoo College student. She says she was held by a customs agent at an Atlanta airport for nearly an hour because she stuttered when trying to tell him she was flying from Costa Rica.
Kylah says the agent interrogated her and accused her of lying about her stutter when ever she spoke fluently. And she missed her flight.
I will say, I'm sure the agent meant no harm and was simply ignorant to Kylah's disability. But I believe Kylah would not have had such a hard time if the agent was knowledgable about stuttering. There is no reason anyone should NOT know what stuttering is.
It's 2016 and more than 70 million people world wide have the disorder. So, please, let's educate ourselves.
